Gastrointestinal (GI) Multidisciplinary Team
The gastrointestinal (GI) multidisciplinary team serves as a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach for assessing, planning, monitoring, coordinating and evaluating the delivery of cancer care services. The team meets quarterly and is comprised of multidisciplinary physicians and allied healthcare professionals, including gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, a radiation oncologist, surgeons, radiologists, internists, nutritionist and an enterostomal therapist.
The GI multidisciplinary team strives:
- To standardize consistent educational materials, pathology reports and work-up processes and procedures
- To create screening guidelines
- To develop treatment plans through tumor boards to be utilized as guidelines in the treatment and care management of GI cancers.
Initiatives developed by the GI multidisciplinary team have included colon screening and treatment guidelines for colon cancer based on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, as well as standardized pathology reports.
In addition, the team is developing an awareness and screening calendar that includes community speaking engagements, continuing medical education (CME) and screening forums. Their collaborative initiatives are ongoing and focused upon every March, during National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
